What I Do
Chris Coffin Photography
Since I was very young I’ve always disliked the posed “look at the camera and say cheese” type of photo. There is a place and time for that, but I’ve always felt that the most truthful, interesting and timeless photographs are those that aren’t set up. Candid, journalistic, whatever you want to call them, I think we all know the ones I’m talking about. They’re often captured accidentally by a trigger-happy photographer. Whatever the cause, the results usually say much more about the subject than the photo that follows it, the "well behaved" photo.
I have spent years as a photographer refining my eye in order to catch those expressions, those “twinkles in the eye” if you will, and doing my best to avoid the setup, canned shot. Even when taking portraits in the studio I’m saving the shutter for when the right, off-guard expression crosses the face of my subject. I talk and ask questions, anything I can to get the model to forget the camera and think about something else in their lives, past, present or future.
My experience shooting dance and performance has taught me a great deal about timing and patience. Rather than constantly snapping away hoping something will come of it, I’ve learned to anticipate…to be aware of the situation and context, to look for a defining action or expression.
What I won’t do is spend the hours of the wedding day doing request shots: planned group photos of everyone jumping in the air kind of thing. Every time I take a photo like that there’s a good chance I’m not taking one of something truly unique and special, something you couldn’t set up and may never catch again. It could be a long lost relative greeting your parents or maybe friends catching up after years apart. It’s not that I won’t take a spur of the moment “Oh, could you get a shot of us!” photograph. What I won’t do is lose hours taking overly formal or silly posed shots; they rarely reflect the true magic of the day or the people involved.

After the big day, it is important that you are able to receive and share the photographs of your wedding with ease. Therefore you will receive digital copies of all images on cd/dvd suitable for 4 x 6 prints, as well as an online gallery with the ability to place orders for more prints and print sizes (payable by all major credit cards). Wedding packages begin at $2200, which includes coverage of your rehearsal and rehearsal dinner and the wedding day through the reception. I don't limit your coverage to a set number of hours (which doesn't necessarily mean I'll be the last one to leave the reception), instead I prefer to take as many photos as are needed to capture the full story of your wedding.
There are also a number of ways to customize your order to suit your needs, including proof books, custom archival printing and wedding albums. Please with your questions and for more details.
